Resveratrol, what is it?

Resveratrol.

Many people may have heard that drinking red wine in moderation and eating some chocolate are potentially good for your health. The reason this has gained some popularity and is largely due to the presence of a compound called Resveratrol, which is produced naturally in plants.

Why do we take it?

Primarily it assist as an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. Oxidative stress is when the cells of the body get over taxed and destructive free radicals are formed as a by-product. The distress on the cell continues and leads to a cascade of free radicals which go on to damage the cell’s integrity and its ability to function. Antioxidants such as resveratrol mop up these free radicals and take them away to be discarded before they cause any damage. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are antioxidant you may be familiar with, which are specific to the retina and are widely used for macular degeneration.

Perhaps the benefits of resveratrol has been over-hyped but certainly including it in part of an overall health strategy is a beneficial e.g. if you are taking supplements, then having it included as an element in this supplement, is a good idea and perhaps more effective than relying on your wine or dark chocolate intake!

Resveratrol is found in the skin of grapes, in blueberries, raspberries, peanuts, pistachios and cocoa.

There are many claims to the effectiveness of resveratrol as a compound, it

It is generally accepted that many diseases are a result of long term, low level inflammation, that eventually manifest as the “disease” whatever the ultimate title it is given on diagnoses.

We know if we can deal with the inflammation at the early stages we can ultimately prevent the disease from developing or at worse in a lesser form. This is a multi-faceted issue and there are typically a concoction of triggers that stresses the cell or organ, to an extent an inflammatory reaction occurs. Very often the stimuli for the inflammation exist at a low level with little noticeable symptoms initially at any rate.

Nutrof Total is a supplement we frequently recommend to our patients where we detect low level of inflammation and risk factors for degenerative changes in the eye.  1 capsule a day with food is the recommended dose.
